It is a privilege to be able to give back to our faithful companion the horse, as the horse selflessly offers so much enrichment in our daily lives.

Few human athletes would compete without preparing their bodies using massage and stretching exercises, so it is rather surprising that for the supreme athlete - the horse - this is virtually unheard of!

In The News...

The Equine Journal reviewed Denise's book in their April 2010 issue. Here is what they had to say: "The Illustrated Guide to Holistic Care for Horses" explores the physical, mental and emotional health, well being and maintenance of horses from a complimentary and alternative perspective. This comprehensive resource guide will help those intrigued by, but unfamiliar with, nontraditional methods of maintaining equine health, preventing and treating equine illness, and alleviating pain. Using the techniques featured in this book, in conjunction with veterinary care, can promote continued wellness in a healthy horse, give comfort to an elderly horse, speed healing in a horse recuperating from illness or injury, and help a horse with a chronic or acute condition.

The 2010 March/April issue of The Journal is currently featuring an article discussing Denise's passion for offering a holistic approach to helping horses.  The article is titled ,"Horse Healer," and is written by Heather Darata. Denise's therapy and book are the topics explored in this piece. Visit the “About Us” page on this site, and click “Read Articles” to view the article

Equine Wellness, the national resource magazine, has reviewed Denise's book in their May 2009 issue. Here is what they had to say: Taking a holistic approach to horse care has a lot of benefits. It looks at the whole animal, not just the symptoms, and works to get to the root of problems rather than simply masking them. With nearly 30 years of experience with horses, as well as training in sports massage and equine acupressure, author and licensed riding instructor Denise Bean-Raymond presents The Illustrated Guide to Holistic Care for Horses - An Owner's Manual.

This easy-to-use volume is packed with everything you need to know to keep your horse happy and healthy in a natural way. You'll find chapters on equine nutrition, exercise, massage therapy, stretching and acupressure as well as herbs and essential oils, and how each of these modalities and techniques can help enhance your horse's wellness and performance.

Illustrated with gorgeous photos, this book also includes tips on grooming, dental care, hoof care, mental health and much more. It's a must for any horse guardian with an interest in alternative health.

The Horsemen's Yankee Pedlar also reviewed the book in their May 2009 issue. Here is what they had to say: Denise Bean-Raymond, a veteran equine sports massage and acupressure therapist and a licensed riding instructor, brings us an all-encompassing guide to integrating complementary and alternative methods of health care into our horse's lives. These 224 pages are packed with useful information about nutrition, exercise, massage and much more. And the price tag, at just shy of $25, should make any savvy shopper salivate.

Bean-Raymond expertly shows how holistic practices such as stretching, acupressure, or the use of herbs and essential oils can be used to improve a horse's physical, mental, and emotional health. The author lays out the information step-by-step, using straightforward, familiar language so as not to scare anyone off. The first few chapters actually reflect a traditional horse care book, with only a slight spin on things to incorporate holistic principles or alternative therapies.  But once Bean-Raymond gets into the chapters about complimentary and alternative medicine, readers will find themselves getting out the highlighter and the notepad. For massage, acupressure, and to a lesser degree, herbs and essential oils, the explanations and guidelines are extremely detailed and include a number of useful photos, diagrams and charts. This book is truly one of a kind! BOTTOM LINE: Educate yourself about holistic health care, for your horse's sake.

The president of the International Association of Animal Massage and Bodywork, Jonathan Rudinger, reviewed the book in the July 2009 Newsletter. Here is what he had to say:  Is is an honor and a joy to be able to say a few kind words about the newly published book by IAAMB member, Denise Bean-Raymond, The Illustrated Guide to Holistic Care for Horses, An Owners Manual.

Denise offers her extensive expertise and experience about everything horse and wellness, creating a real treasure for our community. I recall in the 1970's -1990's, there were few credible sources for information about the care and treatment of horses. There were only a few books in the library about horses, old ones about the Spanish Riding School and a hard to find one by Jack Meagher.

The way I had to learn about horses was by taking riding lessons, watching and talking to other riders, vets, and stable hands. I'd ravenously devour every word that might shed some direction and understanding about horses. Like most new riders, I ate, drank and breathed Equus, and Horse and Rider. Where was this book when I was so immersed in horse-world?

The Illustrated Guide to Holistic Care for Horses, An Owners Manual is well written, thoughtfully organized, and infused with the love, passion, appreciation, and understanding that can only come from a true horse-person. It offers great introductions and provides a source to beginning equine massage, TCM, nutrition, herbs and essential oils. Holistic Care for Horses explains how these traditional modalities can be integrated with modern veterinary care and training methods. I am so impressed with the quality of publishing and printing. Holistic Care for Horses is a beautiful book and easy to use. The sensitive photography by Glenn Scott, clear illustrations by Gayle Isabelle Ford, and book design by Judy Morgan all combine to create not only a magnificent coffee table book; it is an important working manual for every stable. I absolutley recommend this book to all equine enthusiasts. - Jonathan Rudinger, President IAAMB
