Exclusive Equestrian Services
Alternative therapies, such as massage, are some of the first
forms of healing, with records dating back over 5,000 years. A
true test that the therapies are effective is that they are
still in use today throughout the world. Exclusive Equestrian
Services brings the benefits of massage therapy and acupressure
therapy to equines through Denise Bean-Raymond, a certified
equine massage therapist and acupressure therapist.
Sports massage therapy is incredible beneficial to horses, due to
the fact that sixty percent of a horse’s body weight is skeletal
muscle. With so much muscle, horses develop difficulties such as
pain, tightness and knots, which prevent’s them from performing
their best. Massage therapy relives stress and tension and keeps
the muscles loose and working, to not only improve performance,
but to reduce the chance of injury. Other benefits of massage
are that it lengthens connective tissue, which increases range
of motion, it prevents the buildup of lactic acid, which causes
fatigue, and it increases blood flow. Massage benefits injured
horses by increasing circulation, which promotes healing, and
reducing inflammation in joints to relive pain. Denise notes
that Western medicine and Eastern medicine (Alternative Therapy)
should be used in conjunction. The veterinarian should be the
first professional to be contacted if a horse is ill or injured.
Another alternative therapy that Exclusive Equestrian Services
provides is Acupressure Therapy, a non-invasive healing art that
uses the practitioner’s touch to stimulate acu-points, which is
turn stimulates the body to heal itself. Acupressure is an asset
in treating arthritis, muscle soreness, anxiety and digestive
problems. It also improves the immune system and is a great
preventative therapy.
Because Denise is a state licensed hunt seat riding instructor,
nationally certified by the American Riding Instructor’s
Association, she has the unique ability to visually detect
movement issues and performance related problems that arise in
horses. She is then able to treat the horse accordingly,
providing the best results for your equine partner.
Exclusive Equestrian Services provides barn and show
calls, furnishing pre-event, post-event and maintenance massage
and acupressure treatments.
Denise is also available for clinics, lectures and demonstrations.
Quarry Publications has signed Denise to author an equine book
that discusses holistic health care for horses. She is currently
writing the manuscript. The book is due out in February 2009.
Alternative therapies are an invaluable tool for every horse,
whether competing, injured or a companion that deserves the
best. For further information, call 978-828-1974.

Denise Bean-Raymond of Exclusive Equestrian Services offered an Equine
Sports Massage Therapy clinic on November 18, 06 at Littlehorse Farm in North
Andover, Massachusetts, owned by Joyce Mckew. The clinic included a lecture and
demonstration. It discussed various aspects of equine massage therapy including
the history of massage, muscle components, muscle function, muscle issues,
reasons/benefits of massage, muscle locations on a horse, massage strokes,
massage sequence, and basic strokes for horse owners. It proved to be quite a
success with many local horse owners in attendance. Another clinic discussing
Equine Acupressure Therapy is going to be offered late winter/early spring 2007.
The date for this clinic will be posted on the website at

Bean-Raymond , 32, of Exclusive Equestrian Services spends her

Trained in both horse massage and acupressure, Bean-Raymond has
the remedy for a variety of equine maladies.
We caught up with her at her home base, the barn at little horse
Farm off Boxford Street.
When did you know you wanted to work with horses?
I’ve been passionate about horses my entire
life. I can recall being a toddler and wanting to learn how to
ride horse. I’ve been riding and competing for 27 years now.
Are hose massage and acupressure new therapies?
They’ve become really popular over the past 10 years. As
people started taking better care of themselves and loaded to
alternative therapies, they did the same for their animals. But
horse massage isn’t anything new. The process itself dates back
some 5000 years. It’s very well documented during the
Renaissance.
How long does it take to massage a horse?
A good massage takes about 1 ½ hours. Acupressure treatments vary
anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes.
Is it hard to do?
It’s a very physical job. I do weight training, cardio, yoga and
Pilates to stay in shape. My strength helps theirs.
What ailments can you treat?
Arthritis, muscle spasms, adhesions, inflammation, chronic pain
and diseases. It stimulates proper organ function and helps
build the immune system.
What’s the best compliment you can get from a horse?
If he falls asleep. That means he trusts me
and he’s been open to the treatment. And unlike humans, horses
aren’t guarded. They let you know what they like and what they
don’t.
Are there any occupational hazards?
Oh yeah. Sometimes the horses will try to bite you or kick
you. And massage and acupressure both stimulate bodily
functions, so I always have to be careful near their hind ends.
How do people react when you tell them what you do?
People are generally very, very curious, very
intrigued. Then, their next question is usually, “Do you do
people, too”’ And I have to say, “No.” A woman recently asked me
if my services could help her quit smoking. I had to laugh.
